 On December 15, 2001, Jack Dunker opened the doors of Cache River Basin Vineyard & Winery. At that time, he had a vision of what this beautiful countryside in Johnson County could be. Along with the winery, that vision included a restaurant where his customers could sit and enjoy great food, great service, and a great view of the amazing countryside. With the opening of Wineaux's Restaurant, part two of the vision is coming to life. Part three, two units of Bed and Breakfast, is now underway. Hopefully they will be complete by the fall of 2009. Flint Hill Vineyard

 The Indians of Southern Illinois chose the high ground for their campsites. Knolls gently rising from the banks of a creek or small river provided a location for the band to live and be content with the abundance of the land. Flint Hill is located on such a place. The Native North American grapes were a part of the scene and flourished on the fertile land. In recent years, the introduction of grape varieties from Europe has been found to thrive on the same terrain used as the Indian campsite. High, well drained soil gives Flint Hill the quality grape needed to craft exceptional wines. If your production has a need for quality fruit, contact Flint Hill.

Following the tradition of their grandfathers who planted grapes in the rolling hills of Saline County, Illinois in 1913, Louis Bertino and John Molinarolo chose the French hybrids Chambourcin, Vignoles, Seyval Blanc, New York Niagara and the ever popular Concord for Flint Hill Vineyards. The whites are subtle and fruity. The reds are nutty and full bodied – preferred by connoisseurs.

 GenKota Winery, located in Mt. Vernon, IL, I-57/64, exit 95, opened December 12, 1997. The Amish-built winery sits on a gentle hill overlooking two acres of growing vineyard.  Orlandini Vineyard began its roots in 1988, the first vines were planted. Over two decades later the grapes are still flourishing. Shawnee Winery Cooperative was formed to create a market for small grape growers in the southern Illinois area. The idea was to develop a secure market for each year's harvest and to provide a value added bonus of patronage from the sale of wine made from the members' grapes. With major support from the USDA and the State of Illinois, Shawnee Winery has become a reality.

The history of winemaking in Illinois began around 1830 and by the early 1900's, Illinois had grown to be the fourth largest grape growing state in the United States. After Prohibition was enacted, almost all of the vineyards in the State were destroyed. Only in the last few years has the industry experienced resurgence in grape production.
